PM's Conservatives Tumble In Another Opinion Poll

UK

Latest opinion poll from IpsosMORI shows a notable decline in support for Prime Minister Boris Johnson's Conservative Party, with its lead cut from eight points to just three points.

  • CON: 40% (-5), LAB: 37% (-), LDEM: 8% (+2),GRN: 5% (-), IpsosMORI, 11 - 18 Sep, Chgs. w/ Aug
  • Comes just days after a YouGov poll showing Labour level-pegging with the Conservatives on 40%, the first time the Conservatives had not led in a poll by that agency since June 2019 (when the Conservatives and the Brexit Party were tied on 22%).
  • A catalogue of controversial issues including the failure of the COVID-19 track and trace system, the unavailability of coronavirus tests in many parts of the country, the U-turn over school exam results, and the issue of potentially breaching international law have all served to hit the gov'ts support in recent weeks.
  • Nevertheless, it seems that in being seen to support a 'hard Brexit', Johnson has secured a floor of support for his party at around 40%, a formidable target for any opposition party to overhaul.
