PM's Former Advisor To Give Much-Anticipated Evidence On Pandemic Handling

UK

An event that is being followed closely by Westminster watchers, but is unlikely to have any significant market impact or alter public opinion notably, former chief advisor to the prime minister, Dominic Cummings, is due to give evidence to the joint House of Commons Science and Technology and Health and Social Care select committees this morning, starting at 0930BST (1030CET). The session is expected to last 4 hours.

  • Cummings, a key figure in PM Boris Johnson's Downing Street setup until December 2020, is due to give evidence on the gov'ts plans and handling of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The relationship between Cummings and No.10 has soured significantly since his removal, with the former advisor engaging in a lengthy twitter thread hinting at some potentially embarrassing revelations for the gov't and the PM.
  • While the evidence is likely to be prominently featured in the UK news cycle, it is unlikely to prove market moving nor is it likely to have a major impact on public perceptions of the gov't or opinion polling. Recent polls have shown much of the public are unaware or Cummings and his former role, and many those who do know who he is do not view him as a reliable witness.
