POLAND: Duda Speaks With Trump, Wants To Meet In Coming Weeks
POLAND
- Prime Minister Donald Tusk said that his government was planning to keep energy prices frozen next year and has asked the Finance Minister to come up with a method to do it. NBP Governor Adam Glapinski suggested that administrative decisions on energy prices will have significant impact on inflation at the beginning of 2025 and hence will be consequential for interest-rate decisions. Over the medium term, however, inflation is expected to return to the target in 2026 regardless of the government's decisions on existing energy price caps.
- President Andrzej Duda said that he spoke with US President-elect Donald Trump and they agreed to hold a face-to-face meeting in the US in the coming weeks. Unsurprisingly, Duda said that the two leaders will discuss the situation in Ukraine.
- The ruling Civic Coalition will hold a primary election, likely on November 23, to choose its presidential candidate ahead of the 2025 election. Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski threw their hats into the ring.
- Chief of the General Staff Wieslaw Kukula told Rzeczpospolita that "whether a war breaks out depends on us" as he called for bolstering Poland's defence capabilities and said that NATO allies would come to each other's defence.
