Police Probes Signatures Submitted By MK Party, S. Africa Observes Public Holiday

  • The Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) called on the police to speed up the investigation into reports that ex-President Jacob Zuma's MK Party allegedly forged the signatures supporting its candidate lists. The accusations represent just one in a series of legal challenges faced by the newly established party.
  • The IEC dismissed criticism of a meeting between some of its officials and US ambassador Reuben Brigety earlier this week, noting that the intention was to assure foreign diplomats that the country is ready for the May 29 elections.
  • Wandile Sihlobo, Chief Economist of the Agricultural Business Chamber of South Africa, said that food price outlook for the rest of the year could be better than expected, despite risks from drought conditions, due to lower loadshedding levels.
  • South African markets are shut for the Worker's Day, which is a public holiday.
