Poll Shows Hypothetical Pan-Opposition Candidates Beating DPK's Lee

SOUTH KOREA

Latest hypothetical opinion polls from Gallup Korea ahead of the 9 March presidential election show potential pan-opposition candidates Yoon Seok-youl from the conservative People Power Party (PPP) or Ahn Cheol-soo from the centre-right liberal People Party (PP) ahead of liberal Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) candidate Lee Jae-myung.

  • Gallup Korea poll: Hypothetical presidential poll: Yoon Seok-youl as the Pan-Opposition candidate: Yoon Seok-youl (PPP): 42%, Lee Jae-myung (DPK): 40%. Fieldwork: 11-13 January 2022. Sample size: 1,001
  • Gallup Korea poll: Hypothetical presidential poll: Ahn Cheol-soo as the Pan-Opposition candidate: Ahn Cheol-soo (PP): 45%, Lee Jae-myung (DPK): 38%. Fieldwork: 11-13 January 2022. Sample size: 1,001
  • There is no agreement yet between Yoon and Ahn's parties. The PPP is historically the more powerful party compared to the PP, but initial public support for Yoon's candidacy has fallen amidst a poorly-run campaign.
  • Ahn could be more likely to defeat the incumbent DPK's candidate, but would need the backing of the larger party in order to do so and it is unclear whether the PPP would be willing to give up the potential of holding the presidency to do so.
