Poll: US, UK Remain Most Trusted Allies, Turkey As An Adversary

EU

A new study carried out by the European Council on Foreign Relations found that EU citizens continue to see historic allies the US, the UK, and Japan as the bloc's closest partners, with Turkey as the nation that respondents were most likely to view as 'an adversary - a country we are in conflict with'.

Source: ECFR, Datapraxis and YouGov (DE, FR), Dynata (DK, ES, HU, PL, PT, SE, IT, AT), AnalitiQs (NL), Alpha (BG).

  • A combined poll of respondents from 12 EU member states found the US and UK as the foreign nation most likely to be viewed as an 'ally', with 21% of respondents putting the two nations in that category.
  • The most likely nations to be viewed as 'rivals' or 'adversaries' were Russia (18% rival, 17% adversary), China (25% rival, 12% adversary), and Turkey (15% rival, 26% adversary).
  • The poll does show that while citizens in many EU member states are not likely to view non-EU nations as 'allies', they see almost all countries listed above as 'necessary partners', highlighting a willingness of EU populations to countenance working with anyone from historic allies like the US to potential geopolitical and economic rivals such as Russia and China.
