Polls Point To Lengthy Coalition Talks As Far-Right Banned From Running

GREECE

Latest opinion polling ahead of the 21 May legislative election shows a congested political field, with projections at present indicating that at least three parties will be required to form a workable majority coalition. It should be noted that the electoral maths has been made somewhat less complicated by the barring of the far-right National Party-Greeks from fielding candidates.

  • PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis' centre-right New Democracy (ND) retains its lead at the top of polls, but this has continued to shrink in recent weeks. ND's support sits around 35%, with the main opposition leftist SYRIZA of former PM Alexis Tsipras on around 29%.
  • On 12 April, MPs from ND and the centre-left PASOK voted to bar the National Party-Greeks from fielding candidates in the election as the party would not “serve the free functioning of a democratic constitution.” The decision now goes to the Supreme Court for implementation. The Greeks party is spearheaded by Ilias Kasidiaris, who is currently serving an 13-year prison term for offences including murder, racist violence and money laundering related to the neo-Nazi Golden Dawn party.
  • Without The Greeks able to take up seats, the formation of a coalition could prove somewhat easier. Nevertheless, a three or even four-party coalition could be required for an overall majority. As such, coalition negotiations could continue for some time post-election.
