Population Growth Continued To Surge Albeit With Some Downward Revisions

  • The Canadian population jumped 0.9% non-annualized in the three months to Jul 1, its strongest Q2 increase since the 1950s.
  • It meant the year-ago pace accelerated to 2.9% Y/Y (in the press release, 3.0% in the StatsCan data file) from a downward revised 2.7% Y/Y in Q1 vs the previously reported 3.1%.
  • It’s the “highest population growth rate recorded for a 12-month period since 1957 (+3.3%), during the Hungarian refugee crisis and at the height of the baby boom.”
  • 98% of the 1.16mln increase in population over the past year came from immigration, 60% of which is non-permanent.
  • Gov Macklem's mostly neutral remarks on population growth from back in July: "Rapid population growth is contributing to both supply and demand in the economy. Newcomers to Canada are entering the labour force, easing the labour shortage. But at the same time, they add to consumer spending and demand for housing."
