POWER: French Hydro Stocks Widen Surplus to Five-Year Average

French hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 47 – decreased by 0.5 percentage points to 78.2% of capacity. But stocks slightly widened the surplus to the five-year average, RTE data showed. 

  • Stocks decreased by 2.7 points the week prior.
  • French hydropower stocks widened the surplus to the five-year average to 3.88 points last week, compared with 3.28 points the week earlier.
  • Reserves also narrowed the deficit to last year’s levels to 3.47 points, compared with 4.24 points the week before.
  • Power demand in France last week increased to 58.84GW, up from 54.03GW the week before.
  • France nuclear generation last week increased by 631MW to 46.36GW.
  • Hydropower generation from reservoirs last week edged down by 160MW to 1.72GW. Output from pumped storage edged up by 221MW last week to 1.42GW. Run-of-river generation last week increased by 658MW to 4.09GW.
  • Combined onshore and offshore wind output increased by 6.63GW on the week to 11.22GW. Solar PV output last week edged down by 411MW to 1.34GW.
  • Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Grenoble last week totalled 8.8mm, compared with the seasonal normal of 22.61mm.
  • Looking forward, the latest weather forecast for Grenoble for this week suggested precipitation at 13.1mm, below the seasonal average of 23.3mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Paris are forecast between 4C and 12.4C this week, with temperatures above normal for most days.
  • French nuclear availability is forecast to average 50.99GW this week, Reuters forecasts showed, which would be an increase on the week. Nuclear availability stood at 82% of capacity as of Tuesday morning, RTE data showed, cited by Reuters.
  • Wind output in France for the remainder of this week is forecast between 2.23GW and 9.11GW during base-load hours according to SpotRenewables.
  • France’s hydrological balance is forecast to end this week at 1.7TWh. The balance is forecast to narrow in December to end at 990GWh on 10 December.
