POWER: Poland’s Jan 25 Edge’s Down On EU ETS, Coal

Poland’s Jan 25 power contract has fallen slightly from the previous session to track losses in Emissions, with unchanged prices in coal providing limited support. However, temperatures in Warsaw are expected to get cooler, dropping into negative territory over 5-9 Dec – possibly increasing heating demand. But with limited works at power plants over January 2025 – a strong power supply could keep prices somewhat subdued.

  • Poland Jan25 baseload power settled at PLN477.36/MWh compared to its settled price of PLN478.38/MWh on 27 Nov, according to data on Polish power exchange TGE. The contract has been on a general downward trend since 22 Nov.
  • EUA DEC 24 down 1.2% at 67.66 EUR/MT
  • Rotterdam Coal DEC 24 up 0% at 119.75 USD/MT
  • Average temperatures in Warsaw are set to flip below the seasonal norm over 5-9 Dec to be between minus 0.1C and minus 1.9C
  • Limited maintenance and generation units is expected over January, with unplanned works over 7-17 January 2025 expected at just one 242MW unit of the 1.9GW Polaniec coal plant. And at the 630MW Plock gas plant over 11-14 January.
  • But no works are expected at the 5.1GW Belchatow coal plant, 2.2GW Kozienice 2 and 1.8GW Kozienice 1 plants, latest Remit data sow.
  • The Jan 25 contract traded 7 times in 8 lots from 10 lots exchanged in the previous session.
  • Jan opened at PLN478/MWh – the high for the day – before dropping to PLN476/MWh – the low for the day – towards the end of the session.
  • Closer in, the day-ahead rose to PLN644.82/MWh for Friday delivery from PLN515.58/MWh for Thursday amid wind output forecasts to be at 2.43GW tomorrow compared to 4.64GW today, with demand unchanged on the day.
  • Looking slightly ahead, wind is expected to drop to 1.10GW on 30 Nov (Sat) – which may support delivery prices, however, with lower demand on the day anticipated at between 15.95-21.10GW – prices will likely be weighed down.
  • Wind will then be at 2.33-3.98GW over 1-2 Dec, with demand on 1 December at between 14.45-19.25GW – weighing on delivery.
