POWER: Spain’s Hydro Stocks See First Weekly Increase Sind End-May

Spanish hydropower reserves last week – calendar week 41 - saw the first weekly increase since end of May to rise to 48.5% of capacity, up from 47.5% of capacity the week before, according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Stocks have consecutively been declining since end of May, when levels were unchanged on the week.
  • Spanish hydropower generation from reservoirs increased to 397MW to 2.26GW last week. Output from pumped storage was broadly stable on the week at 627MW. Run-of-river generation last week increased by 244MW to 1.05GW.
  • Nuclear generation in Spain declined by 889MW last week to 6.05GW. The 1.01GW Almaraz 1 nuclear reactor is undergoing planned maintenance until 9 November.
  • Gas-fired generation last week decreased by 971MW to 3.95GW.
  • Solar PV output decreased by 2.3GW on the week to 3.17GW. Wind output decreased by 1.96GW to 8.75GW. 
  • Power demand in Spain last week edged lower to 25.14GW, compared with 25.54GW the week before.
  • Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Huesca stood at 25.9mm last week, above the seasonal average of 8.1mm. 
  • Looking ahead, the latest ECMWF forecast suggested precipitation in Huesca will total 30.5mm this week, above the 30-year normal of 14.2mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Madrid are forecast to remain above normal until 16 October after which temperatures are expected to fall below normal until 19 October, before rising back up. 
  • Wind output in Spain is forecast between 4.78GW and 9.95GW during base-load hours for the remainder of this week according to SpotRenewables.
