Spanish hydropower reserves declined further to 47.9% of capacity as of week 38, down from 48.6% of capacity the week prior according to data from Spain’s Environmental Ministry.

  • Spanish hydropower generation last week increased, with output from reservoirs rising by 621MW week on week to 1.82GW. Run-of-river generation was broadly stable at 576MW last week, as well as pumped storage generation at 835MW.
  • Nuclear generation in Spain last week was also stable at 6.98GW.
  • Gas-fired generation last week increased by 1.1GW to 5.26GW.
  • Solar PV output last week declined by 1.92GW to 5.41GW and onshore wind output fell by 1.05GW to 6.09GW.
  • Power demand in Spain last week 25.67GW, broadly stable from 25.68GW the week prior.
  • Precipitation in the hydro-intensive region of Huesca was above the seasonal normal last week, totalling 13.5mm, compared with the average of 2.1mm.
  • Looking ahead, the latest ECMWF forecasts suggested precipitation in Huesca will be broadly in line with the seasonal average this week, totalling 4.6mm, compared with the 30-year normal of 3.2mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Madrid are forecast to remain above the seasonal normal until this weekend, when temperatures will drop well below normal.
  • Spain is forecast to see high wind output for most of this week at 7.42GW to 18.46GW during base-load hours. Solar PV out this week is forecast at 8.08GW to 10.63GW during peak-load hours according to SpotRenewables.
