POWER: Swiss Hydro Stocks Rebound

Swiss hydropower reserves last week rebounded and increased by 1 percentage point to 84% of capacity as of 16 September, after falling two consecutive weeks, BFE data showed. 

  • Reserves narrowed the deficit to the five-year average to 1.2 points, compared with 1.8 points the week before.
  • The deficit to the long -term average – since 1997 – narrowed to 3.1 points, down from 3.6 points the week before.
  • Swiss hydropower generation declined last week by 1.12GW last week to 2.11GW.
  • Nuclear generation last week edged higher by 53MW to 2.93GW.
  • Power demand last week in Switzerland averaged 6.97GW, up from 5.91GW the week prior.
  • Precipitation last week in the hydro-intensive region of Sion totalled 61.5mm, well above the 30-year normal of 36.1mm.
  • Looking ahead, forecasts for this week suggested precipitation in Sion will rise below the seasonal average to total around 6.4mm, compared with the seasonal average of 36.4mm.
  • Mean temperatures in Zurich were below the seasonal normal at the start of this week but are forecast to ise above normal from 18 September.
  • The Swiss hydrobalance is forecast to remain positive and is forecast to end this week at +791GWh.
