Prabowo Team Denounces Challenge To Election Result

INDONESIA

The legal team of President-Elect Prabowo Subianto have called out attempts by opposition canididates to overturn the result of the February presidential election, arguing that any disqualification would 'negate the people's right to vote'. The legal team claimed that there was 'No intervention from President [Joko 'Jokowi' Widodo], or other authorities on the election results'.

  • Added that there was 'No exploitation of gov't programmes to intervene in the election.' Say that 'Social aid was not targeted to the electorate', following claims of effective 'vote buying' by the opposition. Prabowo's leaal team also denied that there was any nepotism involved in the candidacy of Jokowi's son, Gibran Rakabuming Rakam, who ran as Prabowo's VP candidate.
  • The comments come as a refuting of the claims of defeated candidates, former state governors Anies Baswedan and Ganjar Pranowo, who outlined their challenge to the election result in court on 27 March. Reuters reports the two alleged that Prabowo "was helped by pressure on regional officials from a partisan administration and President Joko Widodo, with social aid used as a tool to ensure just one outcome."
  • A decision on whether to annull the result is expected to be delivered by 22 April. The weight of expectation is on the court dismissing the challenge. This is especially with regards to the accusations of 'nepotism' that allowed Gibran to run, given that it was the same court that altered the rules to allow him onto the ballot.
