Prague Confirms Imminent Visit Of Taiwanese Chief Diplomat

Czech Foreign Minister Jan Lipavsky confirmed media reports suggesting that his Taiwanese counterpart Joseph Wu will visit Prague next week, albeit he emphasised that the government is unlikely to abandon its official policy towards the self-ruled island.

  • Reuters had earlier run a source report suggesting that Wu could appear at one event with Czech President Petr Pavel in a "diplomatic breakthrough." He was expected to speak at a security conference in Prague on June 14 directly after a keynote speech from the Czech President.
  • The move would be rather unusual, as European leaders do not normally appear on one stage with Taiwanese officials. However, it would fit into the re-orientation of Czechia's foreign policy towards a more pro-Western stance under the rule of Prime Minister Fiala and President Pavel.
