Pres Aide- We Fundamentally Reject Putin 'Peace Proposal'

UKRAINE

Wires reporting comments from Ukrainian presidential aide Mykhailo Podolyak following a 'peace proposal' outlined by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The proposal would see Russia retain control of the four Ukrainian oblasts annexed in Sep 2022 (Luhansk, Donetsk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson) and the full withdrawal of Ukrainian troops from these regions. These would seem to be the clearest comments to date from Putin regarding his terms for ending the war.

  • Podolyak says that there is "no possibility to find compromise" between Putin's statement and Ukraine's position. Says the comments have no relation to any negotiation process, and are not an attempt to agree on anything. Podolyak: 'Putin's conditions amount fo proposing that Ukraine admits defeat and signs away it sovereignty.'
  • Podolyak also claims that Putin is seeking to 'seize the agenda' ahead of the Ukraine peace summit taking place in Switzerland this weekend.
  • FT reports that at the summit, "President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to appeal to nations that have been indifferent to his nation’s plight,[...]. He will home in on three of the 10 points in his peace plan: nuclear safety, food security and return of Ukrainians, including children, being held by Russia. The remaining points, which include the full retreat of Russian forces from Ukrainian territory, would be tackled at a later stage, officials said."
  • Notably major global economies including China, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia will not send delegates due to the absence of any Russian representation.
