Pres Asks Meloni To Form Gov't; Giorgetti Confirmed As Fin Min

ITALY

Wires confirming that President Sergio Mattarella has asked Giorgia Meloni, leader of the right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy (FdI), to form a gov't. The new coalition gov't will be sworn in at 1000CET (0400ET, 0900BST) Saturday 22 October.

  • The right-wing gov't will be led by Meloni as PM, and alongside her FdI will contain Matteo Salvini's right-wing populist League, former PM Silvio Berlusconi's centre-right Forza Italia, and the small centrist Us Moderates alliance.
  • Minister of Economic Development in the outgoing Draghi gov't Giancarlo Giorgetti, a long-standing League deputy will become finance minister.
  • FdI co-founder Guido Crosetto to become defence minister.
  • Forza Italia member Antonio Tajani becomes foreign minister and deputy PM.
  • Salvini becomes transport and infrastructure minister and Deputy PM.
