Pres. Michel: "I'm Confident EUCO Will Sanction Russia Oil"

EUROPEAN COUNCIL

Speaking in Greece, European Council President Charles Michel states: "Τhe people of Ukraine are fighting for their homeland but also defending our freedoms and democratic principles...We must break the Russian war machine...I am confident that the Council will imminently impose further sanctions, notably on Russian oil."

  • At present, College of Commissioners meeting to decide on Commission's proposal for sixth round of sanctions on Russia, with focus on whether this includes oil embargo and if such, are there carve-outs for Russian oil-reliant states.
  • On issue of Russian natural gas rather than oil, European Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson makes comments on EU plans for reducing reliance on Russian gas. Says that she will present a plan later this month to replace 2/3 of the bloc's Russian gas usage by end-2022. Says that the Commission has 'reached out to all major gas suppliers to help replace Russian gas with alternatives'.
  • Simson: "Possible alternative supply routes have been mapped for every EU member state that depends on Russian gas."
