President Biden's Approval Rating Dips Below 39%, Near Record Lows

US

US President Joe Biden's approval rating has continued to drop amid blowback amongst progressive Democrats over his handling of the war between Israel and Hamas.

  • According to FiveThirtyEight, Biden's approval rating of 38.9% is touching the lows he experienced in summer last year during the peak of concerns over energy prices and inflation.
  • Axios reports that, despite broad recognition that Biden’s negotiation skills contributed to deal to hostage exchange-pause in hostilities which is expected to come into effect tomorrow, Biden has suffered political blowback domestically.
  • Axios: “Publicly, the president has remained staunchly supportive of Israel… Privately, Biden ramped up pressure on [Netanyahu] over the course of 13 phone calls to [secure the deal].
  • Axios concludes: “Biden's unequivocal support for Israel... may have done lasting damage to his image among progressives, young voters and Arab and Muslim Americans.”
  • The Hill writes: “Democratic strategists and progressive activists say growing disenchantment among liberals, especially younger Democrats and minority voters, over the war and graphic images of Palestinian civilian casualties could hurt Democratic turnout in the 2024 election.”
