President Biden To Deliver Remarks On Border Security

US

11:15 ET 16:15 GMT: US President Joe Biden will deliver remarks on border security from the White House where he is expected to extend "Title 42" and announce reforms to migration quotas.

  • Biden yesterday suggested that he will make a trip to the Mexican border ahead of the North American Leaders' Summit in Mexico City next week.
  • A trip to the Mexican border is a risky prospect and the White House described a similar trip in November from House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as a "political stunt," but Biden may consider this is an opportune time to confront a politically sensitive issue and demonstrate that Democrats are working to address Republican voter concerns whilst the GOP, engaged in a rancorous struggle to nominate a speaker, cannot be entrusted with power.
  • Republicans have repeatedly criticised the Biden administration for its handling of what the GOP calls a "border crisis" and pledged to open an investigation into Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas.
  • Border policy regularly tops lists of Republican political concerns and was a key vote winner for Republicans at the US Midterm Elections.
