President Bolsonaro Breaks Silence, Transition Process To Begin

BRAZIL
  • President Jair Bolsonaro finally ended a tense silence of about 45 hours in which he had refused to acknowledge the results of Sunday’s runoff vote. Despite not commenting on his loss, the President vowed to respect the constitution and his chief of staff told reporters that the president had authorised him to begin the transition process that would end with Mr. da Silva's inauguration on Jan. 1.
  • "I will continue complying with the orders of the constitution -- it's an honor to be the leader of millions of Brazilians who, like myself, believe in economic freedom, religious freedom, free speech, honesty and the green and yellow colors of our national flag," said Mr. Bolsonaro, speaking to reporters.
  • Additionally, Bolsonaro reportedly told members of Brazil's Supreme Court Tuesday that his election battle against da Silva has come to an end. (AP)
