President Boluarte Remains Firm Despite Increasing Protests

  • Thousands of protesters demanding the removal of President Dina Boluarte from office poured into Peru’s capital, clashing with police who fired tear gas.
    • Many came from remote regions, where the unrest has had a larger impact, gripping the country since Peru’s first leader from a rural Andean background was removed from office last month.
    • President Dina Boluarte said Thursday on national television that her government remains “firm” despite the recent protests in Lima to try to overthrow her.
    • “The government is firm and its cabinet is more united than ever, once again I call for dialogue and I call for calm,” Boluarte said alongside her cabinet.
    • The Public Ombudsman’s Office confirmed there have been 53 deaths related to the unrest.
