President Replaces Top Military Commanders

POLAND
  • President Andrzej Duda accepted the unprecedented simultaneous resignations of the country's top two military commanders, which came about as a culmination of a prolonged conflict between most senior officers and the Defence Ministry. The resignations are believed to have been timed to align with the final stage of the election campaign in order to maximise their political impact. The President tapped two generals believed to be close to the Defence Minister as replacements for the outgoing commanders, fast-tracking the appointment procedure. Sources told Onet that the two commanders were initially planning to resign after the elections but changed their minds as Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak did not involve them in the planning of an operation to rescue Polish citizens stranded in Israel.
  • The government is yet to publish budget data for Jan-Aug, even as the figures are typically made available within 3-4 weeks, BusinessInsider reports.
  • Onet reports that analyses commissioned by the largest opposition party suggest that just a few thousand votes could be decisive for the outcome of this weekend's parliamentary elections.
  • PAP news agency reported that Poland has financed all its borrowing needs for this year, citing comments from the Finance Ministry.
