President Tsai Ing-wen Calls For Trade Pact Talks With US

TAIWAN

Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen has called for talks on a trade pact with the United States to start.

  • This comes at the end of a visit by a high-level US delegation led by Secretary of State for Health and Human Services Alex Azar.
  • Tsai: "The people of Taiwan can see the value and wisdom in building closer economic relations with the U.S. and conversely we hope that the U.S. recognizes the broader strategic implications."
  • Tsai: "We cannot stand alone without support from the community of like-minded democracies. I am proud that the relationship between Taiwan and the US has never been closer."
  • Beijing has highlighted the close relationship between Taiwan and the US as its primary foreign policy concern.
