Putin Holds Sec Council Meeting After Attacks On Border Regions

RUSSIA

State-run RIA reporting comments from President Vladimir Putin speaking at a meeting of the Security Council. Putin claims that, "Enemies are trying to sway [the] situation inside Russia. We will not let them." The comments come after attacks from anti-Putin Russian paramilitary groups operating out of Ukraine hit the border oblasts of Belgorod and Bryansk over the past two days.

  • On 2 June the governor of Bryansk oblast Alexander Bogomaz confirmed that a border village had experienced shelling, stating that there were no casualties. Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov confirmed the death of two civilians in the village of Maslova Pristan from shelling.
  • Sporadic attacks on Russian territory from anti-Putin forces based in Ukraine are unlikely to materially affect the course of the war. However, if sustained and they continue to hit cities well within the Russian Federation it could begin to have an impact on the civilian population's enthusiasm for the Putin gov't and its war in Ukraine.
