The total trade deficit expanded in June to hit its widest level since 
August 2016, with the goods component the widest since September last 
year. On a crude estimate, excluding price effects, these data suggest 
that trade will neither add nor subtract to Q2 GDP. The figures add to 
the evidence that sterling weakness has not resulted in any persistent 
narrowing of the trade gap, with imports in June hitting their highest 
level in current prices on record. The total trade deficit in the second 
quarter was just over stg0.1 billion wider at stg8.944 billion.
