Qatar Signs New 15 Year LNG Supply Deal with Kuwait

LNG

Qatar will sign a new 15-year deal to provide 2m mtpa of LNG to Kuwait starting 2025, Bloomberg said.

  • This is the second deal between the gulf states and is aimed at easing the strain on power plants which had to cut output during the summer.
  • Qatar is already Kuwait’s largest supplier and has an existing contract until 2035.
  • Qatar has been expanding its long-term deals but is yet to tie up all capacity from its 64% production hike to 126m mtpa.
  • Qatar plans to hit 142m mtpa by the end of the decade.
  • Kuwait, whose domestic power demand is rising, boosted by soaring summer heats, expects its demand to hit 14m mtpa by 2035.
  • Kuwait opened a 22m mtpa terminal in 2021, the first permanent LNG import terminal in the Persian Gulf.
