Ramaphosa Calls On ANC Executives To Facilitate Ending Load-Shedding

  • President Cyril Ramaphosa called ending rolling blackouts the nation's "most immediate" challenge but warned that government interventions will take a while to have an effect and that "load-shedding - in one form or another - will be with us for some time." In a speech opening a meeting of the ANC's National Executive Committee, the leader called on officials to come up with a realistic plan to fix the Eskom crisis and boost the economy ahead of the 2024 general election.
  • The two-day meeting ("lekgotla") of the NEC was called ahead of a Cabinet gathering this week, with President Ramaphosa expected to announce changes to executive line-up before his State of the Nation Address slated for February 9. In the meantime, the NEC elected a National Working Committee (NWC) dominated by Ramaphosa's allies, allowing him to consolidate his control over the ruling party. One NEC member told the Mail & Guardian that "this is an even more CR NWC than the last one.
  • Eskom said in an update yesterday that it would implement Stage 4 load-shedding continuously until further notice. Opposition Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julius Malema threatened to call widespread protests against power outages on March 20.
