Ramaphosa Cleared In Public Prosecutor's Final Phala Phala Report

SOUTH AFRICA

South Africa's acting Public Prosecutor Kholeka Gcaleka cleared President Cyril Ramaphosa of any wrongdoing in his final report on the so-called Phala Phala game farm scandal and said that Ramaphosa did not violate the Executive Ethics Code.

  • Gcaleka said that "the allegation that the president improperly and in violation of the provisions of the Executive Ethics Code exposed himself to any risk of a conflict between his constitutional duties and obligations and his private interests arising from or affected by his alleged paid work at Phala Phala farm is not substantiated."
  • Gcaleka's came to similar conclusions in her preliminary report released in March, but she found evidence that head of the South African Police Service presidential protection unit Wally Rhoode and other officials may have "acted improperly" in conducting a probe into the matter.
  • The Phala Phala scandal brought Ramaphosa to the brink of resignation last year, inspiring a political crisis which applied pressure to local assets. However, Ramaphosa decided to fight against the charges, while the National Assembly rejected a report of a special panel, which recommended launching impeachment proceedings against the President.
