Ramaswamy Wins Debate But Campaign Falters Under Increased Scrutiny

US

A new survey from the Economist/YouGov has found that 31% of Republicans and Republican-leaning Independents say that outsider Vivek Ramaswamy won the first Republican presidential debate with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) is 12 points behind, with 19% and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley in a distant third with 8%.

  • However, Ramaswamy's strong debate performance has been undermined this week by a flurry of negative press which has scrutinised his unorthodox foreign policy positions on Ukraine, Israel, and China and political inexperience.
  • Betting markets see Ramaswamy lose ground following the debate. Data from Smarkets shows that now has a 6% implied probability of winning the Republican nomination, down from nearly 15% prior to the debate.
  • YouGov also notes: "More than twice as many Republicans and Republican-leaners who say they'd most like to vote for Trump in the primary choose DeSantis (38%) as their second choice as select Ramaswamy (16%)."
