Rasmussen-Denmark To Join US-Led Coalition Taking On Houthis

DENMARK

Danish outlet Ritzau reporting that Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has stated that Denmark will join the coalition of six countries that are taking on the Houthi rebels in Yemen. On 6 Jan Rasmussen said in a statement that Denmark 'supported' the joint US and UK strikes on Houthi targets, adding "It will come with a huge bill if the Houthis succeed in forcing international shipping traffic away from the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. 12% of all civilian ships sail through exactly that strait,"

  • Denmark is home to Maersk, the second-largest container shipping firm worldwide. Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos on 17 Jan, Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc statedthat the disruption to global shipping caused by the Houthi attacks "...will mean longer transit times and probably disruptions of the supply chain for a few months at least, hopefully shorter, but it could also be longer because it's so unpredictable how this situation is actually developing,"
  • The gov't committed to sending a frigate to the region to assist with Operation Prosperity Guardian in Dec 2023, with the vessel due to arrive by the end of Jan.
