RBA Minutes Focus Of The Week, Next Week CPI & Retail Sales

The last two pieces of data, retail sales and inflation, needed to complete the data picture for the April RBA meeting are not released until March 28 and 29 respectively. Thus, this week is less important on the data front but the RBA’s March minutes are released.

  • On Tuesday, the minutes from the March 7 RBA meeting are published. While the Board made it clear that inflation remains too high, it added some flexibility in its statement. The minutes will be watched closely as to the details of the RBA’s thought on “when and how much further interest rates need to increase”.
  • The Westpac leading index for February prints on Wednesday. It has been consistently soft since April 2022. The 6 month annualised series leads activity compared to trend by 3 to 9 months.
  • Bloomberg’s March consensus update is published on Wednesday.
  • The preliminary March Judo Bank PMIs print on Friday. They all posted above 50 in February.
