Record Increase In COVID-19 Cases And Deaths

UK

The UK registered record increases in both new COVID-19 cases and fatalities related to the virus on 7 January.

  • 68,053 new cases were added to the total number of cases, while 1,325 COVID-19 related deaths were recorded.
  • The number of fatalities was higher than the previous peak recorded on 21 April 2020.
  • Comes as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan declares a ''major incident' in the capital. This does not give the authorities additional powers but is intended to improve coordination between emergency services as well as to highlight to the city's population the seriousness of the situation.
  • As can be seen in the chart below, the country is currently in the midst of a rapidly-escalating third wave of the virus spreading, following the first and second waves in March-April 2020 and September-October 2020 respectively.
