Rep Mike Johnson Wins Speaker Vote

US

Representative Mike Johnson (R-LA) has won a vote to become the next Speaker of the House of Representatives - ending over three weeks of paralysis and firmly establishing the conservative faction of the Republican conference as the dominant force in the chamber.

  • With the vote ongoing, Johnson appears on course to a secure the gavel with a unanimous GOP vote - a remarkable turnaround from yesterday evening when the conference rejected their third speaker nominee, Majority Whip Tom Emmer (R-MN), shortly after he won an internal vote for nomination.
  • Johnson, a relatively junior member of the Republican conference, will now try to engage a staff capable of managing the day-day business of governing.
  • Johnson will also begin work on a highly challenging legislative agenda which includes major legislation on Ukraine and Israel and a CR to avert a government shutdown on November 17.
  • Johnson's win also throws up the unusual dynamic having the two most senior Republicans hailing from Louisiana, assuming House Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA) remains in place.
