Republican Cornyn Leads Democrat Challenger By 1% In Texas Senate Race: Poll

An internal Democratic opinion poll has incumbent Republican Texas Senator John Cornyn leading his Democrat opponent MJ Hegar by 43% to 42%.

  • Poll carried out on behalf of the Hegar campaign by GSG, Latino Decisions and the DSCC from July 25-29.
  • Should be noted that other polls conducted in July give Cornyn, seeking a fourth term in office, a comfortable lead of 8-13%.
  • Nevertheless, races in Texas are being closely monitored, with general election polls showing that Joe Biden could be on course to become the first Democrat to carry the state since Jimmy Carter in 1976.
  • The race for Texas' other US Senate seat in 2018 showed the increasing power of the Democratic Party in the state, with incumbent Republican Ted Cruz defeating Democrat Beto O'Rourke by a margin of just 1.6%, compared to the 15.9% margin Cruz won by in 2012.
