Republican Larry Elder Will Not Run for Governor of California in 2022

  • Republican Larry Elder was the closest challenger in the recall election against Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA) in 2021. Elder’s withdrawal leaves the Californian Gubernatorial race without a clear Republican candidate and firms up Newsom's position as favourite ahead of the November 8 elections. The next closest Republican candidate in the 2021 recall election was Kevin Faulconer who received eight percent of the vote for Newsom's replacement, compared to Elder’s 48.4 percent.
  • Newsom has been subject to increased scrutiny during the Covid-19 pandemic. Opponents have criticised his strict Covid-19 policies and the high rates of state taxation. The movement to remove him from office was buoyed by accusations of hypocrisy when Newsom was pictured dining with friends in contravention of the state’s Covid guidelines.
  • There issues will be central to the 2022 campaign and ahead of the November elections it is likely that Newsom will point to California’s high vaccination rates, and strong performance in minimising deaths per capita as evidence of the state’s Covid policy success.
  • California is one of 19 states with laws in place providing for the removal of politicians from public office via referendum. Attempts to remove politicians from office are common but very rarely successful - only two Governors have been successfully recalled. Arnold Schwarzenegger assumed the Governorship after a recall election removed Gray Davis from the Governor’s mansion.
