Retail Sales Volumes Continue Tepid Trend

CANADA DATA
  • Retail sales were softer than expected in July, increasing 0.3% M/M (advance & cons 0.4) after an unrevised two months at 0.1% M/M.
  • The details offered a stronger take away, with ex autos up 1.0% M/M (cons 0.5) and “core sales” ex autos & gas up 1.3% M/M, but they follow a heavy -0.7% and -0.8% respectively in June.
  • Volumes declined for the third consecutive month, with -0.1% M/M after -0.2% and -0.1%, leaving the 3M/3M rate still very subdued at just shy of -2% annualized -- see the bottom chart below for just how little progress has been made in real terms, with overall sales volumes unchanged from mid-2021.
  • Any upside from the stronger nominal details for July were offset by the August nominal advance for total sales slipping -0.3% M/M.
