Rhine River On Brink Of Effectively Closing

GERMANY
  • N24 reports that water levels on the Rhine River have fallen low enough to raise concerns that it may become impassable.
  • The river at Kaub, Germany - a key waypoint for the shipment of commodities - is set to drop to 47cms by the weekend. That would take it to within 7cm of being all but impassable.
  • Back in 2018, the last time the water got lower, the disruption dented Germany’s fourth-quarter growth by 0.4%, analysts at JPMorgan estimated. This time around, the need for the waterway may well be even more acute because it’s one means of compensating for lost Russian energy supplies.
