Rhine Water Levels at Kaub Chokepoint at 13-month Low

Water levels at the Rhine’s key chokepoint of Kaub have fallen to their lowest level since Sep. 2022, raising barge rates and lowering navigable loading volumes.

  • As of Oct. 9, the maximum load that can pass through Kaub on a barge is 900mt. By comparison, in July around 1,800 mt could be loaded.
  • Water levels at Kaub are currently around 87cm.
  • Barges moving inland to locations such as Karlsruhe must pass through Kaub.
  • This has raised the freight rate to EUR 39/mt, above the average for the previous four-year period.
