Rig Counts and COT Data due Today

ENERGY

Energy – What to watch

  • The latest Baker Hughes rig count data is due for release at 18:00BST. Last week saw an unexpected fall of 2 in oil rigs to 574, but the upward trend is expected to continue having gradually risen from just 172 since mid 2020. Gas rigs continued to increase last week by 1 to 151. The increasing rig counts are still not translating in to significant increase production with EIA data showing crude production unchanged again last week at 11.9mbpd. The capital discipline of drillers, supply constraints and increased costs are limiting well completions.
  • The ICE and Nymex commitment of traders reports will be released after the close today at 18:30BST and 15:30EST. Managed money net longs have increased slightly over recent weeks as bullish sentiment has returned to the crude markets.
