Energy – What to watch
- The latest Baker Hughes rig count data is due for release at 18:00BST. Drilling has stalled in the last couple of weeks after increasing since mid March. Last week the oil rig count was at 574 and gas rigs at 151. The higher rig counts have still not yet shown up as increased production of either oil or gas.
- The ICE and Nymex commitment of traders reports will be released after the close today at 18:30BST and 15:30EST. Managed money net longs have increased over recent weeks as bullish sentiment has returned to the crude markets. ICE have this week announced a reduction in Brent futures margin from today which may help to bring back some liquidity to the market after open interest has fallen by about 20% this year.
