Risk Of Shift To Left Under Lula Decreases

Brazilian presidential frontrunner Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Lula) has suggested that his running mate for this year's elections may be centrist Geraldo Alckmin.


  • Alckmin is associated with fiscal prudence and pro-privatisation policy. This announcement has followed Lula's public approach to centrist former PresidentFernando Cardoso last year and should dispel fears that a Lula presidency would signal a lurch to the left.
  • Recent polling gives Lula a 20 point lead over President Jair Bolsonaro but it is notoriously difficult to unseat an incumbent president in Brazil so expect the election to be closer than polling suggests.
