Brazilian presidential frontrunner Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (Lula) has suggested that his running mate for this year's elections may be centrist Geraldo Alckmin.

  • Alckmin is associated with fiscal prudence and pro-privatisation policy. This announcement has followed Lula's public approach to centrist former PresidentFernando Cardoso last year and should dispel fears that a Lula presidency would signal a lurch to the left.
  • Recent polling gives Lula a 20 point lead over President Jair Bolsonaro but it is notoriously difficult to unseat an incumbent president in Brazil so expect the election to be closer than polling suggests.
