Rodolfo Hernandez Closes Polling Gap To Gustavo Petro

COLOMBIA

Independent presidential candidate Rodolfo Hernandez has surge into contention for the May 29 Colombian presidential elections, according to latest polling data from CNC.

  • CNC projects that a hypothetical second round runoff between frontrunner Gustavo Petro and Hernandez would be deadlocked 48% apiece.
  • Reuters also reports that first round support for Hernandez has jumped to 20.9% in May from 13.9% in April.
  • CNCs presidential preference tracker shows that Federico Gutiérrez still remains the marginal favourite to progress to the second round, but the gap to Hernandez has tightened significantly.
  • If Gutiérrez progresses to the second round, Petro is likely to win the race comfortably. CDC projects: Petro: 52% Gutierrez: 41%
  • Hernandez, a former mayor from Bucaramanga has framed himself as an anti-establishment and anti-corruption candidate and developed a strong following on social media site TikTok.
