ROMANIA: Gov't Survives No Confidence Vote-Wires

CEE

Wires and social media reporting that according to the initial account - as was widely expected - the gov't of Romanian PM Florian Citu is believed to have survived a vote of no confidence brought by the centre-left Social Democratic Party (PSD) opposition.

  • The opposition brought the motion accusing Citu's centre-right National Liberal Party-led gov't of "leading the country into the abyss".
  • The gov't holds majorities in both the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies, making Citu's ousting an unlikely prospect.
  • With only the PSD and the right-wing nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) stating their explicit support for the motion, the vote was always unlikely to succeed in ousting the PNL-Save Romania Union-Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania coalition gov't.
