ROMANIA: Poll Shows Social Democrats Extending Lead As Pres Seeks New PM

CEE

The latest opinion poll from Romania shows the main opposition Social Democrats (PSD) with a large lead over the incumbent centre-right National Liberal Party (PNL) as President Klaus Iohannis seeks a new prime minister following the vote of no confidence against PM Florin Citu earlier this week.

  • AVANGARDE poll: PSD: 35% (+5), PNL-EPP: 22% (-5), Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR): 17% (+3), Save Romania Union (USR): 10% (-3), PRO: 4%, People's Movement Party (PMP): 3%. +/- vs. 1-15 June 2021. Fieldwork: 15-27 September 2021. Sample size: 1,204
  • Pres Iohannis has 45 days to put forward a candidate that can secure majority support in parliament. There are calls for Iohannis (who sits as an independent but hails from the centre-right) to put forwards a PSD candidate, but there is the prospect he nominates another PNL politician, or even Citu once again. Should he put forward two candidates that are then rejected, parliament will be dissolved and snap elections take place.
