Rouble In Free Fall After Russia Invades Ukraine

The rouble gets battered as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced a military operation in eastern Ukraine amid reports of explosions being heard in a number of major eastern Ukrainian cities as well as Kyiv. It is expected that the West will announce further sanctions against Moscow Thursday, with G7 leaders set to discuss the matter in the morning.

  • Spot USD/RUB has surged to its highest levels since early 2016 and last changes hands at RUB83.86, ~2.18 figs higher on the day. Bulls look to take out the 2016 peak at RUB85.96.
