Rough Capacity Increased From 30bcf to 54bcf Ahead of Winter

Centrica has increased Rough gas storage capacity ahead of next winter capacity up to as much as 54bcf compared with the previous capacity of 30bcf.

  • The facility reopened the storage site last year at about a fifth of its former capacity.
  • With an average of just 12 days of gas reserves, the UK is still lagging well behind many other European nations with Germany able to hold 89 days and France 103 days of natural gas in store.
  • “The resilience of the UK’s energy system needs to be substantially improved,” Chief Executive Officer Chris O’Shea said. “But to do this we need the right regulatory support framework.”
  • Centrica plans to invest £2 billion to transform Rough into a major methane and hydrogen storage facility but needs government backing.
