Rough Timeline As House Impeachment Process Gets Underway

US

Today is set to mark the first time that a US president has been impeached twice in what is likely to be a dramatic day in the House of Representatives.

  • The House gaveled in its session several minutes ago. There will be an initial debate followed by two procedural votes.
  • The debate on the article of impeachment, which charges President Trump with inciting insurrection, is due to begin in the early afternoon in Washington, D.C (early evening in Europe, middle of the night in Asia). This debate lasts two hours.
  • Following the debate the House will vote on impeachment in the mid-to-late afternoon in D.C. (late evening/midnight in Europe, early morning in Asia), a process that is expected to take 40-60mins.
  • In the last impeachment vote in Jan 2020, only one House Republican voted for Trump's impeachment, now ex-Congressman for Michigan's 3rd Electoral District Justin Amash. This time around, however, around 10-15 Republicans are expected to side with the Democrats. This includes the third-highest ranking Republican representative, Chair of the House Republican Conference Liz Cheney (R-WY), daugher of former Republican Vice-President Dick Cheney.
  • With all Democrats and some Republicans due to vote for impeachment, the article of impeachment's passage looks to be an inevitability. The focus then moves on to if/when the House sends the article onto the Senate for the upper chamber to vote on the president's removal from office.
