RTRS: German Regulator Could Delay NS II Certification To March 2022

EU-RUSSIA

Reuters reporting that according to its sources, the decision by the German regulator to suspend the certification process for the Nord Stream II gas pipeline could delay its operation until March 2022.

  • If this is the case, it could have notable implications for Europe's energy markets and the region's politics over the winter months.
  • Nord Stream II coming online would reduce the European reliance on gas transported via Belarus or Ukraine. Belarus has already threatened to turn off the Yamal-Europe gas line in the ongoing spat over migrants camped at the Polish-Belarusian border. Earlier today, Belaurs shut down the main Druzhba oil pipeline into Poland for 'unscheduled maintenance'. This kind of episode could become more common in the cold winter months if the EU/Poland seeks to crack down hard on Belarus.
  • Ukraine remiains on a state of high alert over potential Russian military activity on its eastern border. Any further deterioration in relations could see Russia turn off the taps to the Brotherhood pipeline in an effort to put a stranglehold on Kyiv, with disastrous implications for European gas supplies.
