RTRS-US Sees A 'Limited Opportunity' For Nuclear Dialogue
(MNI) London - Reuters reporting that the US sees a 'limited opportunity' to restart nuclear policy dialogue with China according to an unnamed US official. Says that the US seeks arms talks with China focused on nuclear doctrine, strategic warning, and risk reduction. The official says the US is looking to reduce the risk of escalation by miscalculation in the Indo-Pacific.
- When asked about the deployment of missiles in the Philippines, the official says any decision to deploy new capabilities to support the Philippines will be informed by actions they see from China.
- Separately, the official says that on China tariffs, "I think we've been very transparent in signalling our intentions. And my expectation is we'll follow through on our intentions."
This comes as US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan has just finished speaking at a press briefing in Beijing. Delivering comments on a wide range of topics, Sullivan says that he "expressed concern about actions against 'lawful' Philippine actions in the South China Sea". Says that he spoke with the Philippine national security adviser before visiting China. Says that "We didn't reach any specific agreements on the South China Sea."
- Sullivan: "We didn't discuss the American election". Sullivan: "Vice President [Kamala] Harris has been part of designing the administration's Indo-Pacific strategy.'
- Sullivan: "[US President Joe] Biden and Xi will likely be at the G20 and APEC conferences this year [and] may have a chance to see one another."
- Sullivan: "We had a vigorous give-and-take on the issue' of economic security.
